Paul Newman and His Cars
Hollywood Star. Serious Racer. Genuine Car Guy.
Paul Newman may have become famous on the movie screen, but automobiles and motorsports became a serious part of his life away from Hollywood.
Explore His Racing Story ↓Paul Newman Didn't Just Love Cars — He Raced Them
Plenty of movie stars have collected interesting cars. Paul Newman went much further. Racing became a genuine passion, and over time he developed into an accomplished competition driver.
What began as an interest connected with the automobile world eventually became decades of competition, championships and involvement with professional racing teams.
That makes Newman's automotive story different from the typical celebrity-car collection. He wasn't simply posing beside the cars — he wanted to drive them fast.
Racing Became a Second Career
Competition Was More Than a Hobby
Newman became deeply involved in road racing during the 1970s. What could have remained a celebrity hobby instead developed into serious competition, with Newman earning respect through results on the track.
He Earned His Racing Credentials
Newman competed in Sports Car Club of America events and eventually won multiple national championships. His racing career included Triumph, Datsun, Nissan, Porsche and other competition machinery.
From SCCA Championships to Le Mans
Newman's results made it difficult to dismiss him as an actor simply enjoying a weekend hobby. He won his first SCCA national championship in 1976 driving a Triumph TR6.
In 1979, he added another SCCA national title in a Datsun 280ZX. That same year, Newman competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 935, finishing second overall with teammates Rolf Stommelen and Dick Barbour.
The Cars Most Closely Connected to Newman's Racing
Although Newman raced several different marques, his connection with Datsun and Nissan became especially memorable.
What Made Paul Newman Different?
Newman already had fame and success long before he became an accomplished racer. He didn't need motorsports for publicity.
He raced because he genuinely loved competition, machinery and the challenge of getting faster.
That's why car enthusiasts still remember Paul Newman as much more than an actor who happened to like cars. He became part of racing culture itself.
When the Cars Became Part of the Newman Story
Newman's connection with automobiles lasted for decades. Race cars, sports cars and motorsports became part of his public identity, but the fascination was rooted in genuine participation rather than celebrity image-making.
For CarDudes readers, that's what makes his story so interesting. His cars weren't simply trophies sitting under covers. They were machines to understand, improve and drive.
